Victorian Flower Ring Set with Nine Hand-Cut Rose Diamonds
Victorian Flower Ring Set with Nine Hand-Cut Rose Diamonds
About this piece
Nine rose cuts, not one like the next. Before cutting was mechanised, every rose was worked by hand to follow the rough crystal, so each one keeps its own outline and facet pattern. Whoever assembled this flower had to pick the stones one by one and cut the settings to match. The largest rose sits at the centre, eight smaller ones close around it. The settings rest on a closed back, the reverse is chased as a flower, and the shoulders are pierced and engraved with scrollwork by hand. The condition is unusually good for the age. All nine stones are firm, the engraving on the shoulders has stayed crisp, and the shank shows only the smoothing that comes from wear. The pale settings carry the dark patina that belongs to this construction and keeps the stones calm.
